What this tool does

This tool pulls the text out of a PDF and gives it back to you as clean Markdown (.md), the simple, portable text format used by writers, developers, and note apps like Obsidian, Notion, and GitHub. Drop in your PDF and you get tidy paragraphs of plain text you can read, edit, or paste anywhere, without the broken line breaks and odd spacing you usually get from copying straight out of a PDF.

Here is the honest part: a PDF stores its content as a fixed page layout, not as structured text the way a Word file does. So the result is clean, readable Markdown, not a pixel-perfect copy of your original. Headings in particular are not reliably detected, because a PDF has no dependable way to mark which lines are titles. What you get is the real words, split into clean paragraphs, ready for you to add your own structure. If your PDF is a scan (the page is really an image), the tool runs OCR to read the text off the image first.

How it works

  1. 1

    Upload your PDF

Drag and drop your PDF or pick it from your device. Files up to 10MB are supported, and your file is never stored.

  2. 2

    We read the text

The tool extracts the text from your PDF. If the file is scanned, OCR reads the words off the page image automatically.

  3. 3

    Download clean Markdown

Get a ready-to-use .md file with clean paragraphs you can paste or edit anywhere. No watermark, no sign-up wall.

When this comes in handy

Notes in Obsidian or Notion

Pull the text out of a PDF report or article and drop it straight into your note app as clean Markdown.

Reusing old documents

Get the words out of a PDF you can no longer edit, so you can rewrite, quote, or repurpose them without retyping.

Reading scanned files

Got a scanned PDF? OCR reads the text off the page, so you end up with words you can actually copy and search.

Feeding text to other tools

Markdown is the friendliest format for writing apps, static sites, and AI tools. Convert once and use the text anywhere.

Tips for the best result

  • Use a text-based PDF when you can, since OCR on a scan is only as good as the image quality.
  • For scanned files, a clear, straight, high-resolution scan gives much cleaner text than a blurry or tilted one.
  • Expect clean paragraphs, then add your own Markdown headings (#) where you want titles, since the tool does not detect them.
  • If your PDF is over 10MB, split it into smaller files first, then convert each part.
  • Open the .md file in a Markdown editor to preview and tidy up the text before you reuse it.
